Whole Punching punch needle Mollie Makes IKEA hack rug

If you've seen the most recent issue of Mollie Makes (number 115) you may have noticed this IKEA rug which I added texture to using my trusty Oxford punch needle. This was such a fab project to work on with the Mollie Makes team who are also based in Bristol, UK. I chose some of my favourite colours of rug yarn to create a modern, boho vibe. It's got me feeling all the summery feels!

This is a great project if the thought of punching a whole rug is a little too daunting, with a relatively small amount of yarn, an Oxford punch needle, gripper hoop and the instructions you can up-cycle this cheap (£3!!) and cheerful IKEA rug. The rug is the perfect texture for punch needle as it mimics the structure of monks cloth really well. With a nice tight weave the rug holds those stitches in place really well. As it's a strong fabric it also means you can pull your stitches and re-punch without fear of ruining the rug.

Always thinking of my next punch needle project I have already been thinking about what other ready made items I can customise using my punch needle!

If you fancy having a go yourself I have a punch needle Mollie Makes bundle available which includes everything you need for you to customise your own punch needle rug. The kit includes:

  • Boxed #10 regular Oxford punch needle
  • 100% wool rug yarn
  • Morgan no-slip gripper hoop

Then all you need are the instructions from Mollie Makes and a rug - mine was this £3 rug from IKEA. I would love to see your rugs if you do make one! Tag me on Instagram with your pics.
