Learn punch needle with an Oxford Certified Instructor

Come and join Sara from Whole Punching for an introduction to Oxford punch needle. Punch needle dates back to the 1880's and was traditionally used for making rugs; a much speedier alternative than it's closely linked craft of rug hooking. In it's modern application it is can be used for making cushions, wall hangings and many other textiles.

This workshop is perfect for complete beginners without any knowledge of punch needle. Working on a small sampler piece attendees will become confident in using the Oxford regular punch needles, explore different fabrics, frames, hoops and yarn. The aim is to teach the foundation techniques so that you feel comfortable to continue your practice after the workshop.

You'll learn about

  • Tools & materials; punch needles, fabric, frames & yarn
  • Getting started; preparing & stretching fabric, tracing patterns, threading & adjusting needles, different stitches
  • How to punch; including useful tips & tricks
  • Finishing; tidying your stitches, steaming, hemming & whipping

You'll use a range of high quality materials during the workshop and have the opportunity to purchase them afterwards.

Sara is a Certified Oxford Punch Needle Rug Hooking Instructor. She is one of handful of certified instructors who are based outside of North America. Sara has been punching since 2017 and enjoys sharing the craft with others and generally just chatting about yarn!

    Great workshop and wonderful teacher

This was my first workshop in years and first time in two years leaving my toddler (pandemic baby) for the weekend and Sara made me feel very welcomed.
Sara is a wonderful teacher, answered any questions I had. She was very patient and had great tips on how to punch needle. Lovely yarn and materials to work with (bought some to take home too).
Small class size which was perfect, great teaching space (Bristol), will definitely attend again when Sara is back in the South.

    Relax, socialise and learn.

I found punch needle during 2020 when I was looking for a new craft. I bought Sara's book and some materials and made a start but wanted to learn properly from someone who really knows about the craft. That person is undoubtedly Sara. I travelled some distance to attend this workshop and it was so worth it. Sara is patient and explains the principles, pitfalls and tricks of this lovely craft in a way that is easy to understand. The group size was small and everyone was friendly. Since attending, I have tried more projects and am now making the Christmas baubles to give to family and friends. It's so relaxing and therapeutic. If you're not sure, don't hesitate. Give it a try.

Everything about this workshop was a tonic. I went to feel a little peace and cultivate a hobby, and it did exactly that. Sara was a patient and thorough teacher, and was very accommodating when my trains were delayed. The class size was small which made me feel at ease to ask questions. As for the punch needling itself, I loved every element of the process. If you have a follow-up session Sara, I'll be there!
