Learn how to make a punch needle rug

I am excited to be bringing you the first, full weekend punch needle workshop where you will make your own mini punch needle rug.

You will be working on an abstract design, using a selection of 100% punch needle rug yarn to create your own punch needle rug (30 x 45 cm). If you've been playing with punch needle and working on smaller projects, this is your opportunity to scale up and learn how to make your own rugs.

Nothing is more satisfying than working on a larger punch needle project, especially over the autumn. You will spend a weekend with a small group working intensively on your first punch needle rug.

You will leave feeling confident knowing how to choose colours, prepare your fabric, create loop punch needle stitches, tidy stitches, steam and hem your rug. We will be working on a smaller gripper strip frame than the finished size so that you learn how to plan your project and move your work on the frame.

You will learn how to

  • Plan a project that is larger than the frame
  • Prepare the monks cloth
  • Trace a design onto monks cloth
  • Stretch monks cloth on the gripper frame
  • Choose a colour palette for the rug
  • Create punch needle loop stitches
  • Move the rug on the frame
  • Tidy up loop stitches
  • Steam and press the rug
  • Hem a punch needle rug

Materials you will need

Borrowing a gripper frame and Oxford punch needle

If you do not want to invest in a frame or Oxford punch needle prior to the workshop please let me know and they will be available for you to borrow during the workshop. You may purchase them afterwards should you not finish your rug in the class.

Who is this workshop suitable for?

Ideally you will have attended my Introduction to Oxford Punch Needle workshop prior to this workshop. If you have not attended this but have some understanding of punch needle, how to create loop stitches and have used an Oxford Punch Needle previously please let me know. We will do a refresher of punch needle basics at the beginning of the class, but will not be spending an in-depth time practising these before starting on your rug as I want to maximise your time working on the rug over the weekend.

Workshop pace, schedule and size

I endeavour to keep workshop class sizes small to ensure that you receive as much attention as you need in order to complete your project. The punch needle rug workshop will be for a maximum of six attendees.

Workshops are friendly and informal, but will be practically intensive. Over the weekend there is approximately seven hours of punch needle with scheduled breaks. Ample working areas will be provided and students encouraged to take breaks to stand and stretch. If you have any concerns about the pace of the workshop, please contact me in advance.

I (Sara) am a Certified Oxford Punch Needle Rug Hooking Instructor. I travelled to Vermont to study with Amy Oxford and Heidi Whipple at the Oxford Rug Hooking School and qualified in the autumn of 2019. I am one of handful of certified instructors who are based outside of North America. I have been punching since 2017 and I enjoy nothing more than sharing my love for the craft with others and generally just chatting about yarn.

Tickets are non-refundable, but are transferable to another person or date with 10 working days notice. As this is the first punch needle rug workshop the next date has not been scheduled yet. New dates will be added for 2024 in due course.
