Is this yarn suitable for beginners?
Yes, when it is paired with a compatible punch needle and foundation fabric. For chunky punch needle work, we recommend using it with a regular Oxford punch needle or 5.5mm Lavor punch needle and suitable monks cloth.
Is this yarn suitable for an Oxford punch needle?
Yes. It is recommended for regular Oxford punch needles.
It will not work with the fine Oxford punch needles as it is too chunky.
Can I use this yarn with a Lavor punch needle?
Yes, use the 5.5mm Lavor punch needle. This larger needle is designed for chunky yarn.
Can I use it with the fine Lavor punch needle?
This chunky rug yarn isn't the yarn we recommend for the Lavor fine punch needle. The fine set is intended for finer fibres with its largest 3mm tip suited to aran weight yarn. Choose the 5.5mm Lavor for this chunky wool rug yarn.
What fabric should I use with this yarn?
We recommend monks cloth punch needle fabric. When using the 5.5mm Lavor monks cloth with approximately 12–14 holes per inch is suitable.
What's the difference between the 50g and 100g wool rug yarn?
The yarn itself is the same. Choose 50g when you want smaller quantities or more colours in your project and 100g when you expect to use more of one shade, such as for a large background or area of colour.
Is this the same as ordinary knitting wool?
This is a coarse, unrefined 3-ply rug yarn rather than a soft knitting yarn. Its chunky construction makes it particularly suitable for substantial punch needle and rug hooking projects.
Can I make a punch needle rug with it?
Yes. Rug making is one of the main uses for this yarn. It can also be used for other substantial punch needle projects such as cushions and wall hangings.
How much yarn do I need for a punch needle project?
There isn't one quantity that will suit every project. Yarn use depends on the size of your design, your punch needle and loop height, stitch spacing and how much of each colour you use.
For designs containing lots of colours 50g balls can make it easier to buy smaller quantities of each shade. For larger areas of a single colour, consider the 100g balls.
Why does the yarn feel rough?
This is rug yarn, so its texture is deliberately different from a soft knitting yarn. The coarse, unrefined wool is suited to punch needle work where a robust finished surface is wanted.
